Twenty-Three

Grizz

I go more casual in my garment choice for dinner at Kristi’s house. I am starting to think way past the mission, and I didn’t want to imagine a future without her in it.

Vakutan know their jalshagar from the first time they make love. Humans, alas, do not. She may not be sure about me, but I am sure about her. I’m just not sure if I can measure up to what the Precursors have in store for me.

I don a button up short sleeved shirt and casual slacks. I use my tooth sharpener to give my teeth a gleam—even though he'll be hidden beneath a hologram—and buff the scales on my face.

I stop at the grocery store on the way to her place. I shoot her a text asking about what’s for dinner. She replies with spaghetti and meatballs, apparently the choice her son made.

I pick up a bottle of chianti for myself and Kristi, and a bottle of chocolate milk for Nick. Then we can all toast together.

The whole drive over to see Kristi seems to take an eternity even if it isn’t that far. I park my car and walk up to her front porch and knock on the door.

A moment later she appears in the door, her lips peeled back in a lovely smile.

“Hello,” she says.

“Hello.” I lean in for a kiss, but she turns her head so it lands on her cheek instead of her rosy lips. “Dinner’s almost ready. Would you mind helping me set the table?”

“Of course.”

She directs me to where the dinnerware resides. I take out the plates and set three of them on the table. Something delicious smelling burbles in a pot on the stove. Spaghetti sits in a different receptacle, awaiting its sauce.

“You know,” she says. “You responded with ‘of course,’ but it’s not a given that a man will help with that sort of thing. An Earth man I mean.”

“You must have known some poor examples of humanity.”

“Yeah, no kidding.” She looks out the window to where Nick plays in their fenced in backyard. “I hate to say it, but about the worst one was Nick’s father.”

“Oh?”

She gives me a sad, slightly sour look.

“Yeah. I was only sixteen when I met him, and he was nineteen. When I turned eighteen we ran away together. We were going to elope in Vegas.”

She smiles, but the pain in her eyes does not diminish.

“We got about fifty miles outside of Vegas when I finally admitted my vomiting every morning wasn’t just because of the drinking. I bought a pregnancy kit and tested positive. Nick’s dad seemed like he was happy about it. Excited, even. And then, I wake up in the morning, and he’s gone. I haven’t seen him since.”

“He is a poor excuse for a man.”

“You’ll get no argument from me.” She sighs. “Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is if I seem a little…skittish about dating, it’s because I have a pretty good reason.”

“We’ll go as fast or as slow as you wish, Kristi,” I say somberly.
